Freddie Freeman started rallies in the top of the 9th and again in the 10th, as the Braves put up 3 runs to send the game to extra innings. After the Braves suffered 8 innings of coma mode, Jordan Hicks could not record an out in the 9th. Freeman doubled, Josh Donaldson singled him in, Nick Markakis walked, and Austin Riley singled in Donaldson. Ozzie Albies tied it with a single after a 10 pitch battle with Andrew Miller; all the runs charged to Hicks.
The Cardinals outsmarted themselves in the top of the 10th, intentionally walking Austin Riley with 2 outs and runners on 1st and 3rd to set up a lefty on lefty matchup with Brian McCann, only to unintentionally walk McCann to force in the go-ahead run. Freeman’s one out single led to him scoring the winning run.
Julio Teheran allowed only 2 hits in his 5 innings, but walked 4 and struck out only 1. The Cardinals scored 2 unearned runs in the 4th, aided by Riley machete-ing a line drive and a subsequent Donaldson throwing error. Teheran also allowed an earned run in the 5th.
Although the Braves needed only 2 of the Touki, Newky, and Lukey triplets, Uncle Scrooge’s bullpen was terrific, allowing 1 hit in 5 innings. Touki Toussaint threw 2 of them, and Luke Jackson picked up his 7th save. Jacob Webb got the win; Tyler Webb took the loss. Be kind to your web footed friends.
The Braves take their 5th straight series, this time 2 games to 1.
