Atlanta 6 Arizona 2

ESPN.com – MLB – Recap

Paul Byrd allowed a leadoff homer, but then pretty much shut the Diamondbacks down until he got into trouble in the eighth. (Not that Arizona has that impressive of a lineup.) The Braves didn’t get nearly the number of runs they should have against Gonzalez (who lowered his ERA to 11.12) but put up some late runs to make the game comfortable.

Furcal had a big game, going 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Giles reached base three times (hit, walk, HBP) and also had two runs and an RBI. Drew also had two hits and an RBI.

Byrd wound up going 7 1/3, needing only 79 pitches — 56 strikes — struck out four, and didn’t walk anyone. Both runs were charged to him. Martin led an inherited runner score on a sac fly (cutting the lead to 3-2) but Gryboski finished the inning. Smoltz allowed two hits pitching in a non-save situation after the Braves put three runs up in the ninth.

Ortiz tomorrow against Casey Fossum, as the Braves go for the sweep. The Mets have lost, the Marlins are winning, and the Phillies play another crack of dawn game in LA.
