Another game, another win. the Braves scored two runs in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and turned it over to the tag-team of Hernandez and Smoltz. Gryboski got the win.
Albert Hall Lives! Rafael Furcal was 3-4 with a single, triple, and homer coming to the plate in the ninth. But he grounded out. Yesterday, Marcus Giles just needed the triple. Sooner or later, somebody has to hit for the cycle, right? The Braves had eleven hits, once again getting at least one from every starting position player.
Mike Hampton threw five good innings. Unfortunately, he pitched in six innings, giving up four runs in the bottom of the third to turn a 3-0 lead to a deficit. The capper was a bizarre two-run inside the park homer that probably should have been ruled a ground-rule double. On the good side, he struck out six and allowed only two walks, a promising sign.
Ryan Klesko didn’t play for the Padres and is day-to-day with a bruised cheekbone. Keith Lockhart did pinch-hit for them. An illustration:
